I started getting into golf when I was about 35 and was looking for something to do for when I gave up rugby and cricket. My proudest moment – apart from becoming Slinfold 2016 Captain – was winning a golf competition last October that I’d been trying to win for 23 years!
I’ve been a member for 6 years – I think! Best bit about Slinfold is the fact we have such a nice bunch of people as golfing members.
I once played in a game of rugby with 14 current internationals also playing – and it wasn’t a Charity match! I’ve also had my name in headlines on the back of the Sunday Times after a rugby match!
I would like everyone to enjoy their golf and if we can raise some money for the Charities I’m supporting – The Rainbow Trust and Hounds for Heroes – that would be fantastic. I also hope that I can leave the Men’s Section in as good a place as it is now following Clive’s captaincy last year, for my VC this year, James Willoughby.
The hardest part is finding out how to go about getting involved with all the competitions and who to talk to. I think we are a very welcoming Club and as long as new members are given the right contact details for our section we can do the rest – like setting them up with other people to play with, getting handicaps sorted out and generally looking after them in the early months of their membership.
I started playing golf over 50 years ago on, mainly, a social basis as work prevented me from playing at the weekend. I joined a club in Surrey 10 years ago starting on a handicap of 28 which came down to 18 within a year. My proudest moment was at Slinfold on 27 August 2013 when I got my only hole in one on the 2nd hole-see Hall of Fame! The bar bill came to £240.
I joined Slinfold in September 2012 and was immediately welcomed into the seniors section and made to feel at home very quickly. The section has a good mixture of individual and team games with a large number of inter- club matches in the summer. There is also a good relationship with the Ladies section and we have competitive, but very friendly, competitions against them. Any new member will find it does not take long to feel comfortable in the section with golf to suit all tastes and abilities.
My working life was with NatWest Bank, and for a time, I was the only Manager of the only Bank in the only Road that was South of the river on the Monopoly board. I was also a finalist in “Pointless”. I have the trophy, but did not win the money. Fell down on the films of Kevin Spacey!
I am looking to carry on the good work done by the previous Captains and make the year enjoyable for all our members. My charity for the year is Chestnut Tree House-the children’s hospice based in Arundel and I hope to raise a good figure for this charity over the year.
You walk into a new club and, in most cases, you know no-one. I will be contacting all new members and looking to make them feel at home as quickly as happened to me. We are a very friendly section and any new member will find this out very quickly.
I started to learn how to play golf in September of 2010, just after the club had its refurbishment. I joined a Ladies group of lessons and after the second lesson I was hooked! My proudest moment was achieving my handicap, but now I would say it is becoming Ladies Captain.
This is my sixth year at the club. The nicest part of playing golf at Slinfold is our Ladies section, they are the most friendly and welcoming ladies I have met, hence, a healthy section of lady golfers.
Many moons ago, I used to ride and show jump horses. Not a lot of people know that.
I would just like for everyone to say how they enjoyed the year and what fun we all had along the way!
I personally didn’t really find settling in at Slinfold difficult, I would say it depends on the individual. Friendliness and politeness goes a long way in welcoming new members.
