Seniors Matchplay Finals Day 2018

Seniors Knock-out Finals Day 18th September 2018      

Seniors Scratch Division 2 Final  -  Carl Jones & Makio Higashi                                                    

This final was a well contested match with Carl and Makio each holding the lead at some point.
Makio won the 1st after Carl visited the trees on the left!  Carl fought back with a string of wins on Holes 4,5,6 and 7.  Makio won the 9th to leave the 9th green 2 down.
Gross scores of 42 and 44 reflected the quality of the golf. The back nine was just as entertaining with Makio squaring the match at the 14th. Holes 15 and 17 proved Carl’s undoing with a lost ball on 15 and out of bounds on 17.
Makio triumphed 2 and 1 and bought the drinks afterwards !

 Seniors Summer Greensomes Final – David Heimers / Viv Diggens v. Stephen Barrington / Peter Carruthers

 ‘Down to the last Putt’

David and Viv got off to a fast start going 2-up after a great birdie on the 2nd but Peter and Stephen immediately clawed the match back to all-square at the 4th. Stephen and Peter then took a narrow 1-up lead for a couple of holes before again being pegged back and the match was all-square at the turn.    

David and Viv then won the 10th despite giving a shot and a great chip by Stephen on the 11th kept the match at 1-up with both teams scoring a par where it remained with close play to the 14th when David and Viv took another hole to go 2-up. There was some steady play over the next few holes with both sides scoring a par at the 17th with Peter and Stephen making good use of their shot so it was 1-up to David and Peter going down the last. Peter and Stephen played text-book golf to get on the green in regulation whilst David left a greenside chip rather short leaving Viv with a 9 foot putt. Peter played a great putt up to hole for a certain par. It seemed likely that the match would go down the 1st but with nerves of steel (and some loudly knocking knees) Viv sunk the putt for a par to win the match 1-up.

 Seniors Collins Individual Knock Out  - Ray Holmes v. Paul Richman

The remnants of Hurricane Helene blew something more than a stiff breeze over Slinfold on Tuesday. The wind continued to blow and gust throughout the match, but there was nothing windy about the play of newly crowned champion Ray Holmes. It looked as if it might have been so different when opponent Paul Richman shot into the lead winning the opening two holes. It was to be a short lived lead, however, and Ray's canny play up the 3rd and 4th squared the match. Thereafter Ray proceeded to give a master class in match management, using his strokes received wisely, confidently knocking in a series of eight foot putts, and winning 5 & 4 on the 14th green.
